Heaton - James

Source: Crawfordsville Star 6 July 1882 p 1

Once more the sad duty falls upon The Star to chronicle the death of another honored old citizen, James Heaton, Sr. died yesterday at 3:40 p.m. of congestion of the stomach, aged 74 years. Mr. Heaton had been in ill health many months and less than a year ago retired from active business. He was only confined to his bed a few days till death relieved him.  He was born in Butler County, Ohio Nov 20, 1808.  He came to Crawfordsville in 1832 and hence was one of our oldest citizens, having dwelt here ever since.  He served as Recorder of Montgomery County from 48-52 and in the church, Sunday School and in all matters of public importance he took an active and zealous part.  Sept 20, 1830, he was married to Sarah Carter, his surviving wife. As a result of that marriage, 12 children were born to them. Seven of them have died. The living children are: Frank of Washington DC; Ed of Lafayette and James, Jr. of this city. The daughters are: Mrs. DL Hicks and Mrs. JM Seller. Arrangements for the funeral will not be completed until all the relatives are acquainted with the sad news of the death of “Uncle Jimmie Heaton,” one of our best-loved old citizens, who has lived with us half a century from infancy to old age and gone to a better world. - kz
